Have you considered implementing this (http://gpl.internetconnection.net/vi/), it's VI implemented in Javascript, so you get VI with excellent performance

I seem to remember trying that out a few weeks back, and it broke* pretty quickly...

* depending on your perspective, you may think vim is already "broken", by design. but, you know, worse than that even.

As they say, vi has two modes – "beep repeatedly" and "break everything".
