I am trying to point my preexisting domain to PA. I edited the CNAME for www according to these instructions:

It works for www, but not for the domain by itself without www. I was told I need to point the A record to do that. A record takes an IP, how do I point the A record to PA so mydomain.com works just like www.mydomain.com.

I think it depends on your domain name provider. I set up the CNAME record with the www subdomain, which is the only one that points to my PA site. Then my domain name provider had an option for "subdomain forwarding", which is where I was able to map my naked domain name to my www domain name.

I'll ask HostGator (both my host and my name provider) about that possibility. But they just told me to do A record last time I talked to them. And I'd like to keep some of my OTHER subdomains with them because its just like static html and stuff.

As @adevine said, something like "subdomain forwarding" is the way to go (I've also seen it called "domain redirection")
